Chapter 13 · 13.1
Preparing: what to bring and in which order
You're switching to your WebOké Nextcloud. Great! With a bit of preparation, the move will go smoothly and you won't lose anything. This article explains what to bring, with which tool, and in which order.
Which tool do you use?
| You're coming from | Tool | What comes along | Read |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google (Drive, Photos, Calendar, Contacts) | WebOké Import Tool in Nextcloud | Folders from Drive, photos, calendars and contacts | Transferring Google Drive, Photos, Calendar and Contacts with the WebOké Import Tool |
| Dropbox | Data migration in Nextcloud | All your files | Moving Dropbox across with Data Migration |
| OneDrive or Microsoft 365 | Data migration in Nextcloud | Files, contacts and calendars | Transferring OneDrive with Data Migration and Switching from Microsoft 365 to WebOké: files, documents, mail and calendar |
| iCloud, Outlook or another calendar | Export and import | Calendars (ics) and contacts (vCard) | Moving your calendar and contacts from Google, iCloud or Outlook (ics and vCard) |
| Nextcloud Free or another Nextcloud with WebOké | Nextcloud Export in My WebOké | Contacts, calendars and files | From Nextcloud Free to a paid package, or from another Nextcloud provider |
| A Nextcloud with another provider | The desktop app, or export and import | Files, calendars and contacts | From Nextcloud Free to a paid package, or from another Nextcloud provider |
Checklist before you start
| Step | Why |
|---|---|
| 1. Check how much space you're using with your old service. | Does it fit in your plan? With Free you have 5 GB, with Personal 250 or 500 GB. You can arrange more storage in My WebOké (More storage or users, changing or cancelling your package). |
| 2. Tidy up your old service. | The import tools bring everything along. It's best to delete anything you don't want to keep beforehand. |
| 3. Create your users first (Family and Max). | Everyone moves their own data into their own account. See Creating, editing, disabling and deleting users. |
| 4. Log in and secure your account. | For example, set up an authenticator app. See Logging in for the first time and Setting up an authenticator app and saving backup codes. |
| 5. Move your files over first. | This takes the longest. The import continues in the background; you can close the window. |
| 6. Then move your calendars and contacts. | Do this once and into an empty calendar or address book, so you don't end up with duplicates. |
| 7. Only install the desktop app and the app on your phone after that. | That way they sync everything in one go, rather than halfway through an import. See Installing Nextcloud Files on Windows and Which apps do you need on your phone and tablet?. |
| 8. Check that everything is there. | Compare a few folders and count your contacts and appointments. |
| 9. Only cancel your old service after that. | Keep your old service running for a while until you're sure everything has transferred correctly. |
Tip: turn off the sync app of your old service on your computer during the move, for example Google Drive for desktop, Dropbox or OneDrive. That way, two programs won't be working in the same files at the same time.
Please note: new files that you still save to your old service during the move won't come along automatically. So from the start of the move, work in your WebOké Nextcloud as much as possible.
