Chapter 13 · 13.2
Transferring Google Drive, Photos, Calendar and Contacts with the WebOké Import Tool
With the WebOké Import Tool, you transfer your data from Google to your WebOké Nextcloud: folders from Google Drive, your photos from Google Photos, your calendars and your contacts. You do this in Nextcloud itself. The transfer runs in the background, so you can carry on working in the meantime.
Opening the Import Tool
- Log in to your WebOké Nextcloud.
- Click your profile picture in the top right and choose Settings.
- Click WebOke Import Tool on the left (1).

You'll see the Logging in to Google button and the sections Photo import(zip) (2), Google Drive, Google Calendar and Google Contacts.
Step 1: requesting access
The Import Tool is WebOké's own app registered with Google. Google only allows this app to work for Google accounts that we've registered in advance. If you click Google Drive, Google Calendar or Google Contacts without having access, you'll see the window Access to Google Account required.

- Click Submit a ticket (1).
- In the ticket, explain that you want to use the migration tool, and provide the email address of your Google account.
- We'll register your account with Google and let you know when you can continue. Do this for each Google account you want to transfer.
Step 2: logging in to Google
- Click Logging in to Google, or, in the window, click Connecting to Google Account.
- Log in with your Google account and grant permission for the sections you want to transfer.
- You'll return to Nextcloud. You can now use the sections.
Folders from Google Drive
Under Google Drive, choose the folder you want to transfer and start the transfer. You transfer one folder per task. If you have several folders, start multiple tasks; these can run at the same time.
Calendars and contacts
- Under Google Calendar, choose one or more calendars. This is usually done within a few minutes.
- Under Google Contacts, choose which groups of contacts you want to transfer, and which address book they'll go into in Nextcloud.
Photos from Google Photos
Photos are transferred in three steps, because Google only provides them as zip files. The steps are also shown in the Import Tool under Photo import(zip).
- Exporting from Google. Go to takeout.google.com, click Deselect all, tick only Google Photos and click Next step. Under transfer method, choose Add to Drive, export once, file type ZIP and file size 10 GB. Click Create export. Google will email you once the zip files are ready in the Takeout folder in your Google Drive.
- Bringing the zip files to Nextcloud. In Photo import(zip), click Migrate takeout files from Google Drive. Wait until the task is finished.
- Extracting the photos. Choose the Google Takeout Import folder containing the zip files and a destination folder for your photos, then click Start Google Photos Import. The albums are kept.

In the last step, you also choose a few options:
- Create tags for albums: each photo is given a label with the name of its album.
- Convert HEIC/HEIF photos to JPG: handy if your photos come from an iPhone and you want to be able to open them everywhere.
- Compress photos to save space: the photos become smaller, but also slightly less sharp. If you want to keep the originals, leave this off.
- Date filter and Stop after X ZIP files: handy for trying it out with a few photos first.
The date taken, the location and your device's details are kept. You can read more about photos and dates in Photos from Google Takeout with the correct date.
Tracking progress
Each transfer is a task that runs in the background. You can close the window. You can see progress under WebOke Taken Manager in Settings, and you'll get an email when it's finished. The transfer takes anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on how much you're bringing across.
Tip: transfer your photos before you let the Nextcloud app on your phone upload photos. Otherwise, you'll end up with duplicate photos from your phone.
